I initially intended this blog to be about Taurus and the upcoming new Moon on May 11 but this morning found myself in conversation with Mercury once again….consider this a prequel to May’s Mercury retrograde, we are in its shadow as of the 14th.
In many ways it feels like Mercury is the most underestimated archetypal energy in the astrological lexicon.
While the supposed bane of Mercury retrograde affecting our lives has captivated the imagination of nearly everyone culturally, even this face of his is usually viewed at the most superficial level which is in many ways missing the point…or perhaps a better way of say is that is missing the opportunity. And this isn’t to say that things often get mixed up during a retrograde period. They do.
Mercury is often relegated to this simple word: communication. I think a better word would be perception. Mercury is the guardian at the gate between our inner world and the outer world around us. One of his many functions is as a translator between the two. In essence he is the ongoing conversation we live amongst.
I love words. They are mysterious and powerful. They are an art form of their own that we seldom stop to think about. Think of the power a well placed compliment has in your life. Or a loving observation about you from someone dear and suddenly you can see yourself more fully and openheartedly.
And unfortunately on the other side we have all had the experience of someone expressing something harshly and it dominating our thoughts for the rest of the day whether we want it to or not, we simply can’t let go of it.
In many, many ways we live our life as an embodied conversation. Our outer actions are a reflection of our inner perceptions both about ourselves and the world around us. We literally operate within these “conversational” limits on a day to day basis.
The actual meaning of the word conversation from Etymology.com:
mid-14c., "place where one lives or dwells," also "general course of actions or habits, manner of conducting oneself in the world," both senses now obsolete; from Old French conversacion "behavior, life, way of life, monastic life," and directly from Latin conversationem (nominative conversatio) "frequent use, frequent abode in a place, intercourse, conversation," noun of action from past-participle stem of conversari "to live, dwell, live with, keep company with," passive voice of conversare "to turn about, turn about with," from assimilated form of com "with, together" (see con-) + versare, frequentative of vertere "to turn" (from PIE root *wer- (2) "to turn, bend”).
To take this in and understand it such that it can be used within your life is to be able to harness the true power of Mercury both within your natal chart and by transit, even when its retrograde.
Where are you dwelling inside yourself?
There was a time in 2002 when I had moved to Los Angeles from Sedona as a response to my life feeling stagnant. About six months in I was driving on Ventura Blvd thinking “When is my life going to change?” But the irony was that in the past year I had literally changed everything externally.
But internally I hadn’t moved, I hadn’t changed the conversation. I was on a loop. The same song was on repeat in my head. In essence, wherever you go, there you are….
I offer you these words as a way to powerfully interact with your own Mercury. Particularly the upcoming retrograde. Are you in a conversation that truly nourishes you and your experience of life?
Mercury retrograde is a more Yin energy. Great for reorganizing, decluttering and cleaning closets. And of course decluttering your consciousness as well. Are you unconsciously living a song that won’t stop playing in your head?
With my private clients on an on going basis, and in my workshops when we work with Mercury we work at both uncovering and shifting the conversation. Gently and lovingly. And their worlds began to shift in response.
So above all during this upcoming Mercury retrograde be kind, both to yourself and others
**The feminine/yin energy is the energy of magnetism not just receptivity. Particularly if we look at it through the eyes of Venus, which is another blog even though I will speak about it in terms of Taurus in my next post.
